Research Study of the Impact of Military Related Injury on the Brain

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS RESEARCH STUDY?

Researchers at UCSF and the SFVAMC are conducting a study to examine brain function in people diagnosed with PTSD and/or chronic pain in comparison to people who do not have either of these conditions. This information will lead to a better understanding of the relationship between PTSD and pain and ultimately improve treatment for these conditions.

ELIGIBILITY

·        OEF/OIF/OND Veterans and Reservists.

We will ask you some questions over the phone. If you are a potential match for this study, we will ask you to come in for a paid screening interview. Veterans and Reservists WITH and WITHOUT PTSD and/or Chronic Pain are encouraged to call to determine eligibility.

STUDY PROCEDURES

·        If the screening interview shows you are eligible for the main part of the study, we will ask you to come in for an fMRI exam.

·        During the fMRI exam, you will be shown a series of faces and numbers. The faces will have different emotional expressions such as happy or scared.

COMPENSATION

• You will receive $50 for completing the clinical interview.
• You will receive an additional $50 for completing the fMRI exam. Total compensation for completing the study is up to $120 (plus travel expenses).

The screening process will take place at the San Francisco VAMC. The functional MRI (fMRI) scan will be performed at the Neuroscience Imaging Center (NIC) at UCSF.
